Disputatio:Ludovicus

We have to be careful about name translations. Although a Ludwig might go by the name of Ludovicus in Latin, in English he would remain Ludwig, not Lewis. Ludovicus would generally be called Ludovic in English, I think. --Vladisdead 05:10 dec 3, 2004 (UTC)

It's more complicated than that too. Names travel across languages promiscuously. For example if Maria and Miriam are etymologically the same name, is Miriam or Mary the English "translation"? The Latin Vulgate, by the way, uses Maria for both names. It may be best not to give a translation table at all, just listing these under verba derivata. —Myces Tiberinus 05:46 dec 3, 2004 (UTC)
