E Victionario

[preliminary thoughts on] Characteristics of the best style of article:

  • Will use current page formatting guidelines - in particular: use of templates, correct sorting in language category, and the inflection line
  • Will have IPA pronunciations of all major/national dialects, and audio files that represent them
  • Will list any major alternative/dialect spellings, and common abbreviations or symbols
  • Will present etymologies, or acknowledgements of uncertain etymology, from published or otherwise reputable sources
  • Will define, at least, the root sense(s) of the word properly (preferably with genera proxima and differentiae specificae)
    A definition:
    • Must apply to anything that bears the name
    • Must indicate what kind of thing it is (genus)
    • Must only apply to things that bear the name
    • Must actually indicate what the thing is like
    • Must be in good defining style (use clear language, omit needless words...)
  • Will (if not a Latin word) have, besides the definitions, a Latin translation for each sense.
  • Will use each sense of the word in a sentence which illustrates its meaning (and if not a Latin word, will also give a translation of that example into Latin)
  • Will present the word's inflections, if any
  • Will provide guidelines on how to use the word, or avoid usage commonly perceived as uneducated, with reference to published sources
  • Will indicate semantically nearby words: synonyms, antonyms meronyms, holonyms, cognates, etc.
  • Will indicate words derived from this word, in its language and in others
  • Will (if a Latin word) have at least 25 translations, with all information
  • Will have at least five citations of the word in use, spanning five centuries, or the life of the language, or the life of the word, whichever is shortest
  • Will include links to at least one other dictionary entry on this word, or to a Wikipedia entry on that word in its language

For contrast, the most minimal substub entry should have at least:

  • the language of the word
  • an approximation of the meaning

an article has enough to not be marked as {{stipula}} when...?
