Discrepancy: According to Sihler, medial -iH₃- becomes -yō- before consonants, and -i- before vowels, thus:

• The stem ζω is from PIE *gʷiH₃- before consonants, e.g. *gʷiH₃-wo-, later *gʷyōwo-, PG *ǰōwo-.
• The stem βι is from PIE *gʷiH₃- before vowels, e.g. *gʷiH₃-eto-, later *gʷioto- (the -e- becoming -o- because of the *H₃)

According to Watkins, they are from different stems:

• The stem ζω is from a PIE variant stem *gʷyeH₃-
• The stem βι is from PIE *gʷiH₃- directly.

Should "βι" be subsumed under this root, or does it merit its own category? I suspect the latter, due to the non-trivial relation of the roots, and the etymological discrepancy. —Myces Tiberinus 04:27 feb 25, 2005 (UTC)
