Sorry that in English:
I was sure this word comes from Czech "kral", which comes from something like "Karel", that is the Czech form of the name "Charles" which comes from Charlemagne (the other word, "cesarz" is from the name of Iulius Caesar). This word came to Polish in X century.

- "Charles" itself is from the Proto-Germanic *karlaz meaning "man". I don't know enough about the intermediate stages of the word to say which languages it came through in the meantime–perhaps Czech is among them, but my source (admittedly one on Russian, not Polish directly) didn't enumerate it. –Myces Tiberinus 05:10 oct 9, 2004 (UTC)
